Polarities in Astrology
In astrology, polarity describes whether a zodiac sign tends to express its energy in a more outward, active way or in a more inward, receptive way. These two groups are traditionally called positive and negative, and are also often described as masculine and feminine.
The fire and air signs are considered positive signs because their energy is usually directed outward through action, expression, movement, and engagement. The earth and water signs are considered negative signs because their energy is more inward, receptive, steady, and reflective.
Polarity does not mean that one group is better than the other. Instead, it shows two different ways energy can operate in a birth chart. Some signs tend to project energy outward more openly, while others process and develop energy more internally.
Learning polarities in astrology makes it easier to understand the zodiac signs as a system. Along with elements and modalities, polarity helps show how signs express their nature and how different kinds of energy work together in a birth chart.
